Arlington, VA – August 25, 2008 – Better Business Bureau announced findings from its second BBB/Gallup Trust in Business Index survey, noting American consumers say in a seven-month period their trust in businesses has fallen in 13 of 15 industries measured, with an overall composite Index decline in consumer trust of 14 percent. And nearly half (47 percent) of those surveyed say they have only “some, very little or no trust at all” in companies they do business with in everyday life.

Businesses are often asked to show their community spirit through financial support for local high school activities – by buying ads or donating goods, for example. In most cases, the requests come from groups or companies that are authorized by the school. But the Better Business Bureau serving Dallas and Northeast Texas warns that sometimes an independent, for-profit company misrepresents that a purchase somehow benefits a school.

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the independent agency that insures bank deposits, IndyMac Bank was the third-largest financial institution to fail in U.S. history. In the wake of IndyMac’s demise, two more banks in Nevada and California were recently taken over by the FDIC.
